Play Interventions for Children

Play-based therapeutic intervention for children from around undefined years of age - a child-centred, trauma-informed way of working with what a child cannot yet put into words.

Childrens Counselling And Therapeutic Support

Children rarely arrive able to explain what is wrong. A five-year-old who has witnessed family violence, a seven-year-old whose behaviour has changed since a separation, a nine-year-old who has stopped sleeping — none of them will sit in a chair and describe it. Play interventions exist because play is how children actually process experience, and it gives them a way to work through something long before they have the language for it.

This is the work Chitambo Multisupport Services is built around. Our play-based therapeutic intervention is delivered by a highly experienced social worker, using child-centred and trauma-informed approaches, for children from around three years of age.

What Play Interventions Are

Play interventions are a structured therapeutic approach, not simply supervised play. The play materials — sand, figures, art, puppets, small worlds, movement, story — are the medium. The therapeutic work happens in what the child chooses, repeats, avoids and resolves, and in the relationship with a practitioner who stays steady while it unfolds.

Sessions are led by the child within a consistent, predictable frame. Nothing is forced. A child is never required to talk about an event, name a person, or perform distress in order to be helped.

Approaches We Use

  • Sand play interventions — a sand tray and miniature figures let a child build a world and rearrange it safely
  • Expressive and creative play — drawing, painting, clay, puppets and small-world play
  • Story and narrative approaches — externalising the problem so it stops being who the child is
  • Symbolic and dramatic play — rehearsing what happened, and rehearsing a different ending
  • Regulation-focused play — movement, rhythm and sensory play that builds the capacity to settle
  • Parent and carer work — running alongside the child’s sessions, because the home environment carries most of the change

Who It Helps

We work with children who are showing distress in the ways children usually show it — through behaviour, body and relationship rather than through explanation:

  • Children who have experienced trauma, family violence or frightening events
  • Big, frequent or unpredictable emotional outbursts, or shutting down entirely
  • Anxiety, worry, separation distress, school refusal
  • Grief, loss, and adjusting to separation, relocation or a new family structure
  • Significant behavioural difficulties at home or at school
  • Difficulty forming or keeping friendships
  • Regression — sleep, toileting or speech going backwards after a change or an event
  • Children in kinship, foster or reunifying family arrangements

There is a real gap here. Families across the Goulburn Region and Melbourne North regularly tell us they have been on a waitlist for months for child therapy, or have been offered adult-style talking therapy for a six-year-old. Trauma-informed, culturally responsive, play-based work with young children is genuinely hard to find outside inner Melbourne. That is precisely why we do it.

How the Work Runs

Intake with the parent or carer first

We start with the adults. What has happened, what has changed, what has already been tried, what safety considerations exist, and what you are hoping will be different. The child is not asked to attend this conversation.

Getting to know the child

The first sessions are about safety and relationship, not assessment. The child sets the pace and finds out that the room is predictable and that nothing here will be forced.

The therapeutic work itself

Themes emerge in the play — and are worked with in the play. Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly, in a consistent time and space.

Parents stay in the loop

We meet with you regularly to talk about what we are seeing, what helps at home, and how you are going. We share themes and strategies, while protecting the confidentiality of the child’s individual work.

Reviewing and finishing well

We review progress against what you came in for. Endings in play interventions matter, particularly for children who have experienced sudden loss, so we plan and prepare for them rather than simply stopping.

Trauma-Informed and Culturally Responsive

Trauma-informed practice is not a phrase we use decoratively. In practice it means we assume a child’s behaviour is telling us something rather than that the child is being difficult; we build safety and predictability before anything else; we never require disclosure; and we pay attention to what the whole family system is carrying, not only the child in the room.

We work with families from a wide range of cultural and language backgrounds, including African and CALD communities. Cultural context shapes how distress is expressed, what help is acceptable to ask for, and who needs to be part of the conversation. We treat that as central, not as background detail.

Working Alongside Schools and Other Services

Children rarely need only one thing. Where it helps, and with your consent, we work alongside school wellbeing teams, maternal and child health, paediatricians, child protection and family services. Where a family also needs practical help, our child and family wellbeing support and advocacy services can run alongside the therapy.

Where We Deliver Play Interventions

We are a mobile service across the Goulburn Region and Melbourne North, including Craigieburn, Epping, Wallan and Seymour. Sessions are delivered in agreed therapeutic spaces and, where it is appropriate and safe, in the family home or in a school setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can a child start play interventions?

From around three years of age. Below that, the most effective work is usually with the parent or carer about the relationship and the home environment, and we are happy to talk that through with you.

How is this different from ordinary play?

The materials look similar; the frame does not. Sessions are held in a consistent time and space, with a trained practitioner who is tracking themes, attending to safety, working to a therapeutic purpose and reviewing progress with you.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis?

No. You can contact us directly, and a diagnosis is not required. We accept referrals from families, schools, health professionals and community services alike.

How many sessions will my child need?

It depends entirely on the child and what they are working through. Some children need a short, focused block; children processing trauma or family violence usually need longer. We review with you regularly rather than committing you to an open-ended arrangement.

Will you tell me what my child says?

We share themes, patterns and practical strategies with you, and we will always tell you about anything affecting safety. We do not report the content of a child’s play session line by line — children need to know the space is genuinely theirs for it to work.

Can NDIS funding pay for this?

Sometimes. Therapeutic supports may be funded under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living where they relate to a participant’s disability. Note that we are an NDIS service provider and not an NDIS registered provider, which affects how your plan can be used. Send us your plan and we will tell you honestly whether it works.

Do you offer play interventions in the Goulburn Region?

Yes. The Goulburn Region is core service area for us, not an outer edge of it — Seymour, Wallan, Broadford, Kilmore, Nagambie and surrounds.
