Sand Play Interventions

Sand-based therapeutic intervention - a tray of sand and a shelf of figures let a child build what they cannot say, and change it while you watch.

Child And Family Wellbeing Support

A tray of sand and a shelf of small figures does something that questions cannot. A child who will not answer “how are you feeling about Dad leaving?” will, quite often, build a house with a wall around it, put a small figure outside the wall, and then spend three sessions deciding whether to let it back in.

Sand play interventions are one of the core sand-based therapeutic interventions we use within our play interventions work with children.

How Sand Play Works

The child is offered a tray of sand and a wide collection of miniature figures — people, animals, buildings, vehicles, trees, fences, bridges, and figures that carry threat or protection. They build whatever they want. There is no correct arrangement and no interpretation imposed on them.

The practitioner’s job is to be present, to keep the space safe and consistent, and to notice: what gets buried, what gets protected, what is repeatedly knocked down, what is finally allowed to be rescued. Over a series of trays, the material moves. That movement is the therapy.

Why It Works So Well With Children

  • It bypasses the need for words. Distress that predates language, or that is too large to articulate, can still be placed in a tray.
  • It puts distance between the child and the material. It is happening to the figures, not to them — which makes it survivable to approach.
  • It restores control. The child decides what goes in, what comes out and what happens next. For a child whose life has felt uncontrollable, that matters enormously.
  • It is physical and regulating. The sand itself is sensory and settling before anything symbolic happens.
  • Nothing has to be explained. A child is never required to say what a tray “means”.

Parents are often surprised by how little talking there is. A session can pass almost in silence and still do significant work. Change tends to be visible first at home — in sleep, in temper, in how a child recovers from being upset — rather than in what the child reports about the session.

What We Use It For

  • Trauma, including the effects of family violence
  • Grief, loss and bereavement
  • Family separation, changes in living arrangements and contact
  • Anxiety, fears and worry a child cannot name
  • Anger and behavioural difficulties that have not responded to consequences
  • Adjustment after migration, relocation or a change of school
  • Children who are verbally reluctant, or for whom English is an additional language

How It Fits With Other Work

Sand play is rarely used on its own. It sits within a broader therapeutic plan alongside expressive play, narrative approaches, regulation work and parent sessions, and within a trauma-informed frame throughout. Where a family also needs practical help, our child and family wellbeing support can run alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is sand play suitable for?

Generally from around three years of age upward. It also works well with older children and teenagers who find direct conversation difficult, and it is used with adults too.

Do you interpret what my child builds?

We notice patterns and themes over time; we do not hand a child or a parent a fixed interpretation of a single tray. Reading a one-off scene as a diagnosis is neither accurate nor helpful.

Can I watch the session?

Usually not, and that is deliberate — children build differently when a parent is watching. We meet with you regularly to talk about themes, progress and what helps at home.

What if my child does not like the sand?

Then we use something else. Sand play is one option among several, and some children prefer art, puppets, small-world play, movement or story.

Is this available in the Goulburn Region?

Yes — sand-based therapeutic intervention is available across the Goulburn Region and Melbourne North.
