Children rarely arrive able to explain what is wrong. A five-year-old who has witnessed family violence, a seven-year-old whose behaviour has changed since a separation, a nine-year-old who has stopped sleeping — none of them will sit in a chair and describe it. Play interventions exist because play is how children actually process experience, and it gives them a way to work through something long before they have the language for it.
This is the work Chitambo Multisupport Services is built around. Our play-based therapeutic intervention is delivered by a highly experienced social worker, using child-centred and trauma-informed approaches, for children from around three years of age.
Play interventions are a structured therapeutic approach, not simply supervised play. The play materials — sand, figures, art, puppets, small worlds, movement, story — are the medium. The therapeutic work happens in what the child chooses, repeats, avoids and resolves, and in the relationship with a practitioner who stays steady while it unfolds.
Sessions are led by the child within a consistent, predictable frame. Nothing is forced. A child is never required to talk about an event, name a person, or perform distress in order to be helped.
We work with children who are showing distress in the ways children usually show it — through behaviour, body and relationship rather than through explanation:
There is a real gap here. Families across the Goulburn Region and Melbourne North regularly tell us they have been on a waitlist for months for child therapy, or have been offered adult-style talking therapy for a six-year-old. Trauma-informed, culturally responsive, play-based work with young children is genuinely hard to find outside inner Melbourne. That is precisely why we do it.
We start with the adults. What has happened, what has changed, what has already been tried, what safety considerations exist, and what you are hoping will be different. The child is not asked to attend this conversation.
The first sessions are about safety and relationship, not assessment. The child sets the pace and finds out that the room is predictable and that nothing here will be forced.
Themes emerge in the play — and are worked with in the play. Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly, in a consistent time and space.
We meet with you regularly to talk about what we are seeing, what helps at home, and how you are going. We share themes and strategies, while protecting the confidentiality of the child’s individual work.
We review progress against what you came in for. Endings in play interventions matter, particularly for children who have experienced sudden loss, so we plan and prepare for them rather than simply stopping.
Trauma-informed practice is not a phrase we use decoratively. In practice it means we assume a child’s behaviour is telling us something rather than that the child is being difficult; we build safety and predictability before anything else; we never require disclosure; and we pay attention to what the whole family system is carrying, not only the child in the room.
We work with families from a wide range of cultural and language backgrounds, including African and CALD communities. Cultural context shapes how distress is expressed, what help is acceptable to ask for, and who needs to be part of the conversation. We treat that as central, not as background detail.
If you or a child is in immediate danger, call 000. For 24/7 support contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, or Safe Steps on 1800 015 188. Our counselling service is not a crisis or after-hours service.
Children rarely need only one thing. Where it helps, and with your consent, we work alongside school wellbeing teams, maternal and child health, paediatricians, child protection and family services. Where a family also needs practical help, our child and family wellbeing support and advocacy services can run alongside the therapy.
We are a mobile service across the Goulburn Region and Melbourne North, including Craigieburn, Epping, Wallan and Seymour. Sessions are delivered in agreed therapeutic spaces and, where it is appropriate and safe, in the family home or in a school setting.
From around three years of age. Below that, the most effective work is usually with the parent or carer about the relationship and the home environment, and we are happy to talk that through with you.
The materials look similar; the frame does not. Sessions are held in a consistent time and space, with a trained practitioner who is tracking themes, attending to safety, working to a therapeutic purpose and reviewing progress with you.
No. You can contact us directly, and a diagnosis is not required. We accept referrals from families, schools, health professionals and community services alike.
It depends entirely on the child and what they are working through. Some children need a short, focused block; children processing trauma or family violence usually need longer. We review with you regularly rather than committing you to an open-ended arrangement.
We share themes, patterns and practical strategies with you, and we will always tell you about anything affecting safety. We do not report the content of a child’s play session line by line — children need to know the space is genuinely theirs for it to work.
Sometimes. Therapeutic supports may be funded under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living where they relate to a participant’s disability. Note that we are an NDIS service provider and not an NDIS registered provider, which affects how your plan can be used. Send us your plan and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
Yes. The Goulburn Region is core service area for us, not an outer edge of it — Seymour, Wallan, Broadford, Kilmore, Nagambie and surrounds.
Most people we work with combine two or three of these. Mix and match whatever fits your plan.
